EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The RAD2025, the seventh Annual Defores-tation Report in Brazil, produced by Map-Biomas initiative, presents a comprehensi-ve overview of deforestation across all Brazilian biomes from 2019 to 2025, with a focus on the most recent year and considering different terri-torial and land categories. The report consolidates and analyzes deforestation alerts validated and refined with high-resolution images by MapBio-mas Alerta (https://alerta.mapbiomas.org/ ) based on multiple deforestation detection systems. It also assesses evidence of irregularity or illegality, and provides an overview on actions taken by go-vernment agencies and financial institutions to combat deforestation.

Deforestation in the biomes:

Over the past seven years, Brazil has lost appro-ximately 10.9 million hectares of native vegeta-tion, with more than 84% concentrated in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes.

In 2025, deforestation in Brazil decreased by more than 20% compared to 2024.

For the first time in the MapBiomas Alerta his-torical series, the total deforested area in Brazil fell below one million hectares in a single year, reaching 984,794 hectares deforested in 2025.

All biomes showed reduction in deforested area.

The Pantanal presented the largest proportional reduction compared to the previous year, with a reduction of 48.4% and totaling 12,260 hectares deforested in 2025.

The Amazon and Caatinga biomes recorded re-ductions greater than 20% in deforested area in 2025 compared to 2024 levels.

For the third consecutive year, the Cerrado remai-ned the biome with the largest deforested area. Despite a 16.9% reduction, the biome accounted for more than half of the country’s total deforested area (55%) in 2025, totaling 540,614 hectares, with a strong concentration in the MATOPIBA region (70% of the biome’s deforestation).

MATOPIBA accounted for 40% of the total de-forested area in Brazil in 2025, despite a 24% re-duction compared to 2024.

The reductions observed in biomes with grassland ecosystems, especially the Pampa (33,8% reduc-tion), are attributed mainly to forested areas, since detection systems for native grassland suppres-sion still require improvements and integration into MapBiomas Alerta.

The Pantanal recorded the largest average defo-restation event size (75 hectares), despite a 32.1% reduction compared to the previous year.

Agriculture and livestock remain the main dri-vers of pressure, accounting for more than 99% of native vegetation loss over the last seven years.

In 2025, deforestation in savanna formations (51.4%) continued to exceed native vegetation loss in fo-rest formations (46.3%).
